Weekend Camp - Kandanga Country Club 24th - 26th May 2024

 Friday 24th May 2024

Arrived at Kandanga Country Club about 1pm ish,  Our friends Jon and Di are the only ones joining us again this weekend, which is such a shame because it's a great spot to stay.

When you arrive at the Country Club you need to go inside the club and sign in,  I have booked both times we have stayed here due to it's popularity.  So we did that, booked in and had a drink at the bar and a chat to the lovely lady behind the bar and the other lady doing something with the competition bowls that was happening.

Got our site number and proceeded to park and get set up in our unpowered site.

Camping at Kandandga Country Club:

Unpowered sites are $12 pn/per site.

Powered sites are $25 pn/per site.

There are showers and toilets available 24/7, showers are coin operated 3 x $1 coins.  There is a laundry available up the road, Rubbish bins are provided at the back of the club.  You are allowed a fire in a brazier but no open fires on the ground (fire restrictions permitting) Pet Friendly camp area, but unfortunately recent changes by council or insurance means that no dogs allowed at the club even in the outdoor area.  Free Barefoot bowls  with your camping and meals available from 6pm at the club.

About an hour later our friends arrived, signed in and set up next door.  The RV park at the club is very pleasant to stay at, well kept and you don't feel too cramped in.  You're surrounded by paddocks with cows, you have the old Mary Valley Rattler train line running behind the unpowered sites, which is not in use anymore.  Yes there are a few houses above the club but you look out toward the paddocks.

You also have the Kandanga Pub just up the hill from the Bowls Club.  We headed up to the Pub for dinner on Friday night, bought lots of raffle tickets and Jon won a meat tray on a redraw! We had a delicious dinner - my chicken parmy was almost the size of the plate (half of it came home and we had it for breakfast πŸ˜†)  Headed back to camp to sit around the campfire, while the boys sipped on some barrel port.

Saturday 25th May, 2024

Today is the Imbil Food Festival, which is part of the reason we came this weekend.  So after a leisurely breakfast and tidy up, we headed to Imbil about 10am, it is only about 9Klms to Imbil.

Found a park and strolled to the festival, which is in the town centre in the park opposite the pub and also in the park over the road where the old train station and turntable is.

We've got food vans/stalls, produce stalls such as Imbil Homestead, Mary Valley Smallgoods, Amrita Park Meadery, Craft Beer stall, Dog Treats, more stalls with chtuneys, sauces, lemon butters, cooking demonstrations and heaps more.  It wasn't ridiculously big, but it was busy.  Good fun and also pet friendly.  If you didn't eat enough from the various food vans/stalls, there is always, Imbil Pub, Bakery and cafe you can get a feed at.  First time we've been to the festival which is part of the GourMay Mary Valley that runs from 1st May to 1st June.  There are many events which are spread across the Mary Valley region over the month.

Back to camp for some relaxing and perhaps a nap or two was taken.  Of course we have to go and have a barefoot bowl, be rude not too.  We wondered over around 4pm, got a drink and some bowls and got to it.  There is debate about who won the most games, depends on who you ask πŸ˜†

Barefoot bowls is a bit of fun, isn't it.  Dinner at the Country Club tonight and due to it starting to get a wee bit cool we opted for eating in the dining room.  There were a few diners tonight but not as many as last time we were here.  The meals are absolutely delicious.

Lamb Shank special with mash and veg for Craig and Beef Lasagne, chips and salad for me - YUM!

Sunday 26th May 2024

We headed home this morning, but I won't bore you with our journey home.
We stopped in at the Kenilworth Pub for some chicken wings, which we have to admit were not as good as the last time we went there.  At least this time we arrived home to fine weather and could unpack in the sunshine!

Weekend Camp - Esk and Clifton 19th - 21st April 2024

Friday 19th April 2024 - Esk Caravan Park

6 weeks after our Stanthorpe holiday and we're true to our word and off on a weekend camping trip.  This weekend we're starting off overnight at Esk Caravan Park and tomorrow we're doing a Pub camp overnight.

We get away smack on lunchtime, with a mighty 118klms to travel, so about 1 hour 45mins to reach Esk.  It was a slow trip with slow vehicles holding up everyone, but we're not in a big hurry.  Stopped at Toogoolawah for a comfort stop and grabbed a toasted sandwich from the little cafe.  Interestingly, Craig touched the caravan wheels to make sure they weren't hot while he walked around just checking everything and they were cold as a beer on ice.  Onwards to Esk and meet up with our friends coming along this weekend - Jon and Di and their Bullterrier Salty.

Pulled into Esk Caravan Park to sign in and as we followed the bloke showing us our site, we were getting some looks and fingers pointed at us, so I wound the window down to hear this Gold awful noise coming from the wheels on the caravan - Craig  "is that us", reply "umm yes it is".  Got to the unpowered area and set ourselves up in our little patch of grass.  Craig touched the caravan wheels and one was as hot as, so he did the old go forward, reverse and the noise stopped.  Something to have a look at when we get home.  Now, Craig did pull the wheels off when we bought the caravan, replaced the shockies, serviced the drum brakes, replaced the little spring thingy, new brake shoes, greased and whatever else you do under that area, so we are a little surprised at our noise.

We set up the caravan and I realised I'd forgotten a nice shirt for Craig to go out to dinner in πŸ•ΊπŸ’ƒ, so suggested we should go for a walk and see if we could find him a nice collared shirt in town....  We actually stumbled across a great little shop up the end of the street, had women and men's clothing, gifts, handbags and a very friendly shop attendant who was very helpful finding a shirt for Craig.  Arriving back at the campsite and our mates had just turned up not long ago.

A bit about Esk Caravan Park,  we have stayed here once before on an earlier trip to Stanthorpe with our mates last year.  I had read wonderful reviews about it, so through it worth trying.  The unpowered sites are next to a walking path and along side a seasonal creek (this time there was water in the creek, last time there was not).  It's a big grassy area with campsites marked with paint on the grass, but you are escorted to your campsite by friendly staff  in golf buggys.
There are 2 pools (one for adults and one for kids), a big amenities block with.... wait for it..... heated floors in the showers!!!  There is also a small amenities next to the pools.  The main camp kitchen is awesome, big fireplace they light each afternoon in the colder months, pizza oven and the normal cooking stuff,  lots of seating - it's really impressive.  There is also a second camp kitchen but we have not gone into it as yet.  You have a choice of unpowered, powered, cabins, onsite van, motel rooms.  The staff are all very friendly.  Unpowered site is $54.00/night for 2 people.  They are pet friendly and you can have a campfire in the unpowered sites as long as it's in a brazier/firepit with a base and you get a fire blanket from the office to put underneath.  For a caravan park it truly is a lovely place to stay.

We had some nibbles while we caught up and decided we'd head to the Esk Grand Hotel for dinner.  Last time we stayed we had our Boris with us still and had to transport him to the pub in his little cart we had bought for him πŸ’”πŸ₯²
It' a bitter sweet stay at Esk this time and dinner at the pub, but the thought of Boris always brings a smile to our faces.
As for the Esk Grand Hotel, do yourself a favour and go have dinner there.  Thursday night is parmi night and you will not be disappointed, we weren't last time we were here and this time it's a Friday night and there was no disappointment with the meals again, they were delicious.

Back at camp, we put the campfire on and sat around for a while, such a pleasant night and so peaceful in the campground - and it's not raining!!

 Saturday 20th April 2024 - Clifton: O'Shanley's Irish Pub
Awoke to a blue sky this morning, however by the time we'd all had breakfast and packed up, it was starting to cloud over, we are due for showers from this afternoon and we'll be coming home to more rain tomorrow apparently.

Today's destination is the small town of Clifton which is south of Toowoomba, so we've got a massive 113klms to travel, which should take about 1 1/2 hours according to GPS and google maps.  The scenery today was very pretty. We travelled through Gatton, Ma Ma Creek, Fordsdale, Pilton and past the Darling Downs Zoo, bit of a Zig Zag across the New England Highway and into Clifton - didn't know what to expect, never been to Clifton but have read wonderful reviews about O'Shanley's Irish Pub on the Country Pub Camping facebook group I'm on, so see how we go!
First stop in Clifton was the petrol station, we were close to sniffing the fumes to keep driving LOL.  Back over the train line to O'Shanley's Irish Pub and camp for the night.  Pulled up outside and went in to speak to the lovely Lady behind the bar (I did not get her name but when I'd rang a few weeks ago I spoke to a lady by the name of Mandy who was very friendly and helpful)..  I said to her we had to come down to camp the night and have dinner at the pub, which she smiled and said follow me I'll show you where to camp.  Went out the back of the pub where there were already about 3 caravans parked up and she suggested we could park at the back and side of the big shed where 2 other caravans had parked last night.
I thanked her and said we'd be in for a drink as soon as we set up.

Jon got their caravan into position at the rear of the shed and we came around and parked on the side of the shed.  Another camper came over and showed us the drinking water tap on the side of the shed and explained we could plug into power there as well.  Neither of us needed to do that.

So just prior to this trip, Craig replaced all of the solar panels on the caravan due to the issue we had with charging the battery while away for those 2 weeks, the other factor that our electronics guy and Craig established was that the Kings Lithium 300ah batteries management system was stopping the battery taking charge because it was too hot due to those excessively hot days we had while travelling - at high 30's outside the caravan, it would certainly have been around 40 degrees in the battery compartment under the bed.  We now have 4 new solar panels totalling 530watts and they are the black ones that put charge in even on a cloudy day or in the shade.  The boys also dumbed down the 40AH DC2DC charger to help the battery and Craig put in two vents in the battery compartment and where the charger is.  Hopefully if we get stinking hot days again that would melt your thongs to the bitumen, the power system in the caravan will cope better.  After installation for two weeks Craig monitored the battery, solar panels input, DC2DC charger and it has worked a treat.  Just charging from the panels while the caravan was parked in the shade of trees at our place, fridge/freezer was running and it took 2 weeks for the battery to come down to 13%.  Husband is happy.

Right, back to Clifton and O'Shanley's Irish Pub.  We headed in for a drink at the bar and find out about lunch and dinner and have a look at the pub.  What a cracker pub, locals were friendly, bar staff we friendly and happy.  The pub has some much stuff on the walls, ceiling just everywhere to look at.

Dining Room

We have one thing to do this afternoon at 4pm and that's go to the train station over the road from the pub and watch the steam train come through on it's way back to Warwick.  Craig loves trains.
Firstly though, lunch needs to be consumed by all.  We each got a pizza and they were delicious.

We had a few hours after lunch before the train was due through, it's raining now so we went back to the caravans to either have naps or read.  Enjoying our relaxing afternoon and the next thing we hear is a train horn (not a steam train horn though), it's only 3pm.  Well I've not seen Craig jump into action that fast for probably 10 years or more πŸ˜†  Racing down to the corner of the pub, brolly in hand only to see the back carriage going through the station but we're pretty sure it wasn't a stream train, so perhaps they didn't run it today.  There was some disappointment let me tell you.  We went back and closed up the caravan and went into the pub for a drink.
Di joined us just before 4pm in the pub and we discussed the train may have gone through an hour earlier, so we finished our drinks and headed over to the train station, just in case........  yeah no train came but it's a pretty little station and at least Craig did get to go in a train after all.

Complete with hanging flower baskets

Waited about 15 minutes at the train station and decided that was probably the train an hour early, oh well maybe next time.  Back to the pub for more drinks.  I had asked the bar Lady at lunch time if we should reserve a table for dinner and she suggested we should, said the bar area was where the fun was and we reserved the same table we had at lunch.
Jon eventually joined us and I tell you what, the pub did get busy, there were people coming and going for dinner, take away pizza, staying for a couple of drinks then leaving.  Quite the hub of activity.
We got the internet password from the new bar lady that came in, which made life a lot easier for Craig and I, Optus didn't have a signal in the pub and about 1 or 2 bars outside.  Should have asked earlier but didn't see the sign. πŸ™„

Decided to order dinner and there was some quite good options to choose from.
Craig order the Smoked Pork Chop with mash and veg, Jon and Di ordered the O'Shanley's Irish Stew and Guinness Pie and I of course ordered the Chicken Parmi.  All the meals were delicious and afterwards there was entertainment in the form of a bloke singing with a guitar - really enjoyable with some Irish songs and more.  Some locals even got up for some dancing (sorry no video but I wish I had of taken one).

Was a good night at the pub
Headed home to bed, it was pouring rain and quite cool tonight.

 Sunday 21st April 2024 - Heading home
Had breakfast and chatted with Jon and Di about which way we/they were heading home.  It's only about 3 1/2 hours to home so we're not rushing off.  Jon and Di headed off before us going back the way we'd come, for Craig and I we were going home a different way to what we came, makes the journey more interesting.

Just a note on O'Shanley's Irish pub camping:  It is free to camp, however you are expected to patronage the pub for a meal and drinks in exchange.  There are toilets and they also have rooms available above the pub.  Camping is pet friendly and you can have dogs in the outside area at the back of the pub.

We took Clifton Felton Road north and stayed on as many back roads as we could going through Oakey and stopping at Cooyar Pub about 11.15am ish.  Decided we needed a break so hung around until lunch service at 12pm, chatting to the friendly bar staff who explained this is one of their biggest weekends with Cooyar Bike Ride for trail/dirt bikes but it was called off this morning due to the weather and everyone was leaving.  Sounds like a massive event, the pub does the meals on the Friday night and then Saturday night is at the showgrounds where everyone camps.  We grabbed two of the lunch specials Barra, chips and salad and sat in front of the fireplace that wasn't going but felt nice to sit there 😊  Great little pub and there is a free camping area called Swinging Bridge a couple of hundred metres away.

Apple and Grape Festival Holiday - Feb/March 2024 - Day 15

Day 15:  Saturday 9/3/24 - Murphy Creek Escape to Home

Overcast this morning and we had showers overnight.  Just had coffee inside the van then packed up and left.  It's been a rather disappointing last 2 days of our holiday.  Today we are heading home and back to the real world πŸ˜”

Crossed our fingers we didn't come across another caravan coming in, thankfully we didn't.  We're going to stop in Esk for a pie at the bakery for brekky.  Markets are on in Esk this morning and I tried to get Craig to stop in Esk for the night in the unpowered campsite at the Esk Caravan Park (they are really nice, grassed area on the seasonal creek), but he wouldn't, just wanted to get home.

We picked up some handmade chocolates and had a very average german sausage on a roll.  Went to the bakery and grabbed a couple of pies and drove to Toogoolawah to eat in the park.  Unfortunately we missed the turn off to go through Somerset.  Esk pies come in at second place, the clear winner is still Deepwater Bakery!!

Unfortunately that is the end of our tale for this holiday.  The remainder of the day we travelled home and unpacked, started washing πŸ˜†

We are going to start doing our camping weekends every six weeks again, like we used to do.  Trying to go to a different campground or pub (we have discovered the Country Pub Camping scene now) sometimes with our camping mates we usually go with or might be on our own.  Stay tuned and I'll post up our weekends after we've been.

Apple and Grape Festival Holiday - Feb/March 2024 - Day 14

Day 14:  Friday 8/3/24 - Lake Coolmunda to Murphy Creek Escape

It blew a gale all night long, then for a brief period early this morning it was reasonably calm, we had coffee inside then got straight into packing up, by that time the wind was already starting to pick up and be uncomfortable, such a shame.

Heading into the Inglewood Bakery for breakfast and looking Husband I don't think he's awoken in the best of moods 😩  Pies for breakfast which we took to the free camp area to eat, which was now vacant.  Not bad pies but Deepwater Bakery still gets the trophy on this trip.

We are heading through Millmerran and potentially our overnight stop will be at the pub in Cambooya the Bull and Barley Inn.  The road the last couple of days have been absolutely horrendous, you get bounced around, tossed side to side, kidney slapping headache making bumpiness - it was actually making travelling very uncomfortable, not fun and making us crumpy and feeling unwell.  The roads are just crap!

We eventually arrive at the Bull and Barley Inn in Cambooya, lovely pretty old pub at first glance from the outside.  Found a park and wandered in, locals not particularly friendly when we entered, I gave a cheery hello and got one bloke "yeah gidday" very unenthusiastically, then dead silence and stares.  Staff behind the bar were approachable, but disappointingly when we went back in to ask when lunch service started and to order another drink, we were told to wait and then ignored while the bartender went around everyone else at the bar and asked if they wanted a drink, then serviced new people that walked in and eventually came back to us and we asked when does lunch start and got a blunt you can't order until 12pm (it being 11.45am at this point in time) and then we asked if it was okay to order another drink......  you can only imagine how impressed Craig was by this time.  I reckon if he hadn't of been hungry we would have just left and probably should have.

I asked about the camping and was told there was camping available on the block next door that the general store owned as long as you were self container.  We back outside and peered over the fence at the block, not particularly inspiring, and being Friday night might be noisy - Craig not impressed so I guess we're not staying here.  We ordered lunch which were just Entrees, my Bruschetta arrived first and I had finished it by the time Craig's meal came out, which wasn't the Entree, but a main meal size and the calamari was not cooked well - geezus this is not going well!  He ate most of his lunch and said very crankily "I do not want to stay here tonight", I can't really share the rest of his sentence or it would just be a long line of 🀬.  Said to him that's fine, you'll just need to give me a couple of minutes to find somewhere else to go.  Fat chance of that with the mood he was in, got in the car and started driving 🀬

Onto Wikicamps and find somewhere not too far away.  Came across the Murphy Creek Tavern and back up was Murphy Creek Escape.  Happy with those suggestion we set off in that direction trying to miss the middle of Toowoomba but being he was in a mood and followed the car GPS and didn't listen to me, well we ended up going through town didn't we - that went well....  After what felt like a very long time we arrived at Murphy Creek Pub,  we drove in and out of the car park with Craig saying it wasn't inspiring and he didn't like the camping area 🫀

Back down the road a few kilometres to the turn off to Murphy Creek Escape, I hope this place is a nice as the website pictures it.  After what felt like an extremely long time, we came to a very low bridge, our Hilux is 1.9m high and the caravan is 2.7m high - left hand side of the road we'd fit the car only under the bridge, right hand side of the road we were close with the caravan, I think from memory the bridge was 3m high.  So you may need to drive on the wrong side of the road to get under the bridge.  The road to the campground was a narrow road and I'm not sure you would be able to pass another caravan on it, we passed a small car and had to come to a complete stop and it was very tight.  You cross over a causeway and the entrance to the campground is up the hill from there on the right.  Driving in it is not what I was expecting after looking at the website, you pass through the unpowered sites, stopping near the office and the powered sites at the end of the property to book in.  Hmmm, powered sites are devoid of grass and just rocky ground, with quite a lot of permanent camps to one side - overall not a good look.

We booked into the unpowered section and headed back to near the entrance where it was pretty level and not too close to anyone else.  We set up and then went for a walk around the campground, there is an amenities block in the unpowered area that looks like it has quite a lot of toilets/showers.  Most of the area seems to be not mowed or well maintained.  We check out  the amenities and the room is a toilet/shower combo, very basic, old but pretty clean.  Out of the whole building, it was the only door unlocked and by the evening as campers came in, there would have been maybe 20 or so more people for the night - only one toilet/shower open.

We finally had a campfire on our last night, although it did get windy later in the night.  After dinner, we sat around the fire for a while and had a visit from a possum.  We eventually put the fire out, closed everything up because there might be showers tonight and headed to bed.

Murphy Creek Escape:  Powered and unpowered sites, amenities, campfires, pet friendly.  Lots of rules to follow. Unpowered site $28.00/night 2 people.

In all honesty, disappointed with Murphy Creek Escape.  It does not look like their website or photos that I have seen in past years.  We will do not go back.

Look, we are not caravan park campers, you will see that if you've followed our blog or read about the trips we've done in past years.  We generally like bush campgrounds, less people and the serenity and peacefulness of camping in the bush but we just didn't find this campground nice or enjoyable and there really isn't that many campgrounds that we've felt that way about.

Apple and Grape Festival Holiday - Feb/March 2024 - Day 13

 Day 13:  Thursday 7/3/24 - Inverell - Lake Coolmunda

Moving on today, so packed up the caravan, filled up the water tanks, hooked up and we're ready to go.  One stop before leaving Inverell this morning though, Craig wants to have a look at the Woodturning place just out of town.

Cost is $5.00 per person to see this blokes work.  He and Craig had plenty to talk about while looking around his workshop and timber stores.  Finally he invited us to go inside his shop/display area.  Really beautiful work and some of it was so intricate, it would so tediously time consuming but so amazing and also quite pricey.

This bloke also does metal sculptures which are all around his yard and you are welcome to wander around and look at them.  Some of the sculptures were quite clever, he welds them together some various items and spare parts.

We spent about an hour here all up, but now it's time to head off to our lunch stop in Moree.

Along our way today, we passed some very pretty silo paintings.

Upon arriving in Moree and finding the first pub suggestion for lunch, we felt like if we pulled up we may get mugged.  Sadly it just wasn't a very nice area of town, so we headed off to the second suggestion at Amaroo Tavern, which also has a caravan park across the road.
Amaroo Tavern is undergoing renovations but is still open, thankfully because Craig was getting cranky and I feel that if this place wasn't any good I think he'd be tossing all the toys out of his cot shortly.
Sat down, got him a beer and ordered Nachos and Chicken Wings.  As soon as we finished eating we left.  Heading to Inglewood for the night at the free camp, otherwise back up plan is Lake Coolmunda.

Hmmmm,  stopped at the free camp, the trees are full of bats and you are right next to the highway.  We decided to head out to Lake Coolmunda.  We pulled up at the caravan park above the lake where you have to pay to stay at either the caravan park above the lake or the lakeside caravan park.  Lady at reception said the lake was lovely at the moment, so I made the decision to stay there.  She did say if we weren't happy down there, that we could come back up here and stay.  When drove down to the Lakeside Caravan Park and realised it all looked rather familiar - seems both of us had forgotten that we stayed here 7 years ago πŸ˜†  We found a spot away from everyone, which we realised later is about where we camped last time.  What we also had forgotten was how bloody windy it is here - OMG, it is blowing a gale and very uncomfortable.  We set up and went for a wander around the campground, there really wasn't anyone sitting outside their camp enjoying the few and one lot of campers actually packed up and moved up to the top caravan park.

Don't get me wrong, it is a very nice campground, there is old amenities block and a new one that you need to use the swipe card you get when booking in, which also lets you through the boom gates to the campground.  It is beautifully maintained, with picnic shelters around the place, campfires allowed also and pet friendly.  Cost is $30.00/night for 2 people.  It is just horribly windy.

Craig wanted to cook outside and was determined to make it happen, and rigged up wind breaks from our side walls, it did the job but geezus what an effort when there's a perfectly good cooker inside the caravan 😳  We had butter chicken and rice eventually, ate it, cleaned up.  There'll be no campfire tonight and the bugs OMG you'd think they'd be blown away but nope they're all hanging around the lights.  We pulled down the wind breaks and retreated inside for some relief.

Needless to say it was an early night.  We'll do one more overnight stay before getting home.
