Cape York - Wednesday 7/9/11

Our little black alarm clock went off at 7am - he won't let you sleep in any later then that.  Had a liesurely morning, bacon & scrambled eggs for breakfast, nice hot shower after that, then packed up.  Craig decided we'd go back down the track to the Jardine River mouth and see if there was a good camp spot there & maybe better fishing......  Very soft sand track down to the river, took about 1/2 hour to cover 7.5klms.  We peeled off right at the end of the track and followed it along side the Jardine River.  Stopped at the first camp spot, Craig had a look around for any Croc slides (the lady at the Croc Tent had warned us to be very careful with the Crocs around here), he did find a fish frame on the beach just in front & was also worried about the distance from the hightide mark, plus the drop off to the beach wasn't that big.  We moved on to see what else there was.  The next camp had potential, but we kept following the track which ended up in a cleared sandy area, was quite a contrast.  The sand got very soft, so we got out of there as quickly as we could.  Went back to the 2nd camp spot, had a look at the space available to make sure it could fit 2 x Travelanders (tick), set back a bit from the beach/hightide mark (tick), had some shade (tick), had a drop off to the beach (tick), no croc slides/old fish frames nearby (tick).  Craig was being very cautious because of the warning we had received.

Setup camp, Craig was off to try his hand at fishing, while Boris & I sat in the shade at the edge of the drop off, keeping an eye out for crocs while writing the journal.

Mouth of Jardine River

It was getting extremely hot, we had sunscreen on, a hat & sitting in the shade, yet it still felt like you were getting cooked.  Craig & Boris went and had a nanna nap about 3pm. I was hanging out some damp washing until I heard something biggish rustling in the bush, then Boris started growling which didn't help, so I jumped into the camper and sat there for a while.  Boris was still growling & looking out toward the bush - very un-nerving ( Craig managed to sleep through the whole thing).

Eventually I got out of the camper and continued with hanging up my washing.  4pm and time to do our sked with VKS-737, had a bit of trouble getting the antenna tune and getting onto Charters Towers base, eventually had to be relayed to base through another member at Twin Falls.  Turned on the UHF after that to start listening for Jim & Evelyne. Boy had woken up by this stage.

Craig went off to try his luck at fishing again & I stayed close to the UHF to listen for Jim & Ev.  We finally got each other on the radio, but it was very scratchy.  I just kept telling them we were camped on the Jardine & take the right hand track.  They eventually called from the end of the track, so it was easy to find us from there.  5.30pm and they had arrived, very tied from their big day out at Thursday Island. Jim & Ev setup camp, our campsite was rather intimate but it was okay.

Sunset on the Jardine

By the time the boys came back from fishing it was 7pm, so had to change dinner ideas for something a bit quicker to cook.  Ev & I had an early night, but the boys sat by the fire chatting for a bit.
Boris was growling during the night at something, we guessed maybe wild pigs, as Craig had noticed a fair bit of evidence that they were around.
