Birdsville 2013 - Day 7

Tuesday 2nd April, 2013

Good morning, everybody was up around 7am I think and what a beautiful day it is - blue skies, not too hot, you wouldn't want to be doing anything else!
Spaghetti on toast this morning for breakfast.  This morning meeting was brought to order, topic:  where is everyone heading to next.  Adrian, Darren & Hayden were all talking about heading to Camerons Corner, Craig asked me what I wanted to do.....  well, we haven't been to Cameron's Corner and we have an extra day up our sleeve since we left Birdsville early - why not, we'll go to Cameron's Corner to.

Our camp
If you can picture this:  Men having their meeting, ladies tidying up around camp, kiddies running around chasing or being chased by Boris and each other.  Then came the quote of the trip I think:
Jamie chasing Boris toward our camper, Tania following Jamie.
Jamie:  "Boris is running away from me and I want to play with him"
Tania:  "Well Jamie, Boris just doesn't like you, that's why he's running away from you".
Jamie:  "No, but I want to pat him."
Tania:  "Stop chasing him and just call him and he'll probably come over, so you can pat him".

Craig and I heard all of this conversation and just burst out laughing when Tania said to Jamie "Boris just doesn't like you....".  Honestly, you had to be there but it was hilarious.

Now, the flies at Innamincka are just as bad as everywhere else we've been.  They're not your household brand of fly, they're those little sticky bush flies that can make their way up your nose, in your ears & of course into your mouth.  At least there hasn't been a shortage of snacks available each day, all you have to do is open you mouth and you'll get a few flies to chew on!!

Firstly everyone headed down to the causeway to wash off some of the mud that was collected yesterday, and Julie wanted some media shoots of the Travelander cars.  Craig ran into our other neighbours from Birdsville (Vic & Frank), on the other side of the causeway.

This morning the boys decided The Bore Track to Cameron's Corner looked the most direct route and might be a bit of fun.  We were all heading off to look at Wills Grave and soak up some history from here (Darren was saying his boys weren't taught anything about Burke & Wills in school - how amazing is that), so Adrian & Tania decided to head off to find the track and start toward the Corner.

Still a bit of dirt on the trucks & campers

Righto, history soaked up, time to head back into Innamincka for a fuel topup, a few supplies & souvenirs.  Wasn't a promising sign when we saw Adrian & Tania back there - they hadn't had any luck finding the track.  While in the Trading Post we asked the ladies about The Bore Track, they told us the bottom section was closed.  Group meeting to pass on this info and make a new plan.  Adrian made a call to the property owner at the bottom end of the track and confirmed, The Bore Track is definitely closed.
Plan B:  Darren & Hayden's mobs were going out to see the Dig Tree & Burkes Grave, while Adrian, Tania & ourselves will head off down the the alternate track (all dirt roads again today & lovin it), which is 46klms slightly north east  of town.  We will passing Stations named "Orientos", "Santos", "Epsilon" & "Omicron" - all up about 244klms approx to do today.  We'll all meet up again at Camerons Corner tonight.

It's somewhere around 11.30am-12pm now and someones made the call for lunch at the Innamincka Pub before we move on.  All agreed it's a good idea, then there's no stopping this afternoon......  The pub has changed a bit since we were here last.  It's now got a big dining room & beer garden out the side, which definitely wasn't there when we were here last.  Too many flies & too hot to sit out in the beer garden, Boris is allowed in the old screened verandah area so that's where we'll be.  There was no Chicken Parma on the menu, so couldn't sample that.

Lunch at the Innamincka Pub
The road out of Innamincka
Onwards into the wilderness about 1.15pm,  Craig missed the road leading to Nappa Merrie (takes you to the Dig Tree & we needed to go along it to find our track) - looked behind us and there were cars going every which way turning around (except Adrian, he was clever enough to stop at that road and ask on the radio "don't we need to turn left here"), at least someones on the ball - God help us this afternoon on our expedition to Camerons Corner....

Okay, at least we found the turn-off for the track we needed to head southwards.  Adrian's taken the lead this arvo and everything is going smoothly........ until we turned west to early!  After about 20klms from memory, we pulled over at a dam to re-assess our whereabouts.  All agreed turned to early and we were too far north and coming around from the north west side of the Station "Epsilon", instead of the east.  We were supposed to turn south again about 6klms east of "Epsilon", so it's not a bad detour we've created for ourselves.

Along the track somewhere!

We stopped again at "Epsilon" at the crossroads, the girls made an executive decision telling the boys we needed to go about 6klms east of the Station homestead and we'll find the road south we needed to be on.  Hmmm boys aren't sure, so we're told "we'll go 6klms east and if there's no road, we'll back here and take this track that looks to head south", my reply to Craig was "if there's no road up here, yes we'll come back here and you'll be going and knocking on the homestead door and asking for directions!"

Go the girls, what do you know about 6klms east there's the road we need heading south!!  We're back on track again now.  Just goes to show one little wrong turn and .......

We rolled into Camerons Corner around 6pmish from memory, the sun was only just starting to set.  First thing on everyones mind was a drink at the Camerons Corner Store/Hotel.  Very welcoming & friendly lady behind the bar, she came out and explained the camping arrangements, costs and had a bit of a chat.  we decided to do the bush camp for $5.00/night/car, which is straight across the road and you can use the toilets and a shower is $5.00.  No sign of Darren & Hayden's mob yet and darkness has fallen, we're hoping if they're pushing through into night fall to reach us here, that they are careful as there were lots of cows on the side of the road coming in.

Tania has offered to share their marinated chicken with us tonight, as she has way too much and doesn't want leftovers.  We've setup on the road side of the camping area, so the other lot can see us as they come in and we've left enough room for them to setup and form something of a circle, giving us a slightly protected area to socialise/eat in if necessary.  I don't think there will be too much traffic going past tonight.....

We started to here bits of Darren & Hayden's conversation on the UHF, so Adrian & Craig started trying to contact them - finally they're talking to Darren and they're not far away.  I should have had the camera out, because the headlights coming through the darkness toward us looked awesome and Hayden following in the ploom of dust looked even better - yeah no photo, couldn't get the camera out fast enough :(  Everyone's setup, we've had dinner and it's time to swap stories of this afternoons journeys.
