7am wake up and the decision has been made to move onto Mapoon today, then come back to Weipa in a couple of days so Craig & Jim can do a fishing charter. Jim & Evelyn are staying another night in Weipa to go to the Rodeo, then joining us at Mapoon area after discussions this morning with them while the water tank was being filled up.
We headed off from Weipa about 9.15am, across the single lane bridge over the Mission River. Noticed some fellows in a tinnie under the bridge fishing and they had some big looking on their fishing pole. Hopefully that's a good sign for when we come back and the boys going fishing. Continuing north west to the turnoff to Mapoon, which takes you slightly north east until the left turn to go north to Cullen Point, which is where we are headed. There seems to be 3 camp areas that we know of up there - Cullen Point, She Oaks and Janie Creek. The roads are all "main dirt roads" and generally not too bad, a few rough sections & a bit of roadworks. Initially we were thinking of camping at Janie Creek, but when we reached the t-junction decided to have a look at Cullen Point first as it was closest. Drove into the camp area at 10.45am, has basic toilet & cold shower facilities and the area is at the mouth of the Wenlock River. Spoke to some older people camped there as we drove in and they said it was nice camping and they had some mozzies last night. They suggested a shady camp up the second track or there are some bush camps up the first track. We took a look up the second track, but someone was already camped nearby the shady spot, so we headed up the first track. Following the track along side the beach, we came across a cracker of a spot under some trees over looking the water. This spot was us, campfire, good view, slight breeze and nobody else - perfect.
Craig tried his hand at beach fishing after lunch, but no luck (surprised! I'm not), it must have been tiring since he and Boris are having a nanna nap at 1.20pm...... Temperature today has reached 35.8 degress @ 1.20pm & humid. Sunscreen & hats have been applied since arriving. Looking north of us, it looks a bit rainy - lets hope not.
We took Boris down to the beach for a swim & play in the sand, while Craig tried fishing again. Boris had a fat time, lying in the water, digging in the sand, chasing Craig's lure as he was casting. Had to be on croc watch the whole time though. I'm covered in sand now & so is Boris.
Got the fire underway at 4pm, having a bar-b-que with potato bake for dinner, so need some good coals. By 5.30pm we were having dinner (just like the pensioners!), had a couple of false alarms with the rain. Had a nice hot shower after dinner, then packed up the galley and retreated inside the camper to read as the mozzies had decended upon us. 7pm we're ready mags, writing the journal & eating Tim Tams, nice breeze blowing through the camper, but it's still 29.5 degrees!
