Cape York - Wednesday 24/8/11

Finally have some internet - 19/9/11.
Boris decided to jump on us about 7am this morning.  The wind blew a gale all night, didn't make for a peaceful sleep.  Wind peaked between 10 -12pm last night, OMG did it blow!
Decided best thing to do this morning was get the camper closed up before the wind picked up again and did it pickup.  No coffe, no breakfast with the packing up going on - didn't start my morning very well, I'll tell you.  Packed up and chatted to the lovely older couple camped next to us, then headed to the bakery for a coffee & bacon/egg roll for breakfast - on the go of course.
Today's destination due to the current weather pattern smacking the east coast is Musgrave Station (originally a Telegraph Station in the Cape), which is on the Peninsular Development Road - inland, hoping there's no wind!  8.22am we're travelling north west out of Cooktown toward Battlecamp Road, which takes you into Lakefield National Park.  We will travel 276klms in 5 1/2 Hours today - all Cape dirt roads.
From Cooktown it was 37klms before we hit Battlecamp Road, then another 5.5klms we crossed Isabella Creek,  they are just beautiful creeks up here.  Continuing north west up the range, (which they have bitumened that section of road now) toward Old Laura, passing through the Normanby River, then entering Lakefield NP.  Crossed the Laura River & past the Old Laura Homestead (didn't stop this time as their was a tourist bus in there).  Turn right and continue on past the New Laura Ranger Station, then past the turnoff to Kalpower Crossing (beautiful spot, we camped there last time - can't with Boris this time).  They have moved the self registration station out to the intersection now, rather then the Ranger Station which is another 1.2klms on). Drove north to Breeza Plains Outstation, stopped to have a look and stretch our legs.  Some other people were stopped their and we're intrigued with our camper and came over to ask about it.  5min stop turned into about 20mins.

Continued onto Hann Crossing, good camping there on the Nth Kennedy River, Cooktown Shire Council were doing roadworks putting in a new causeway (not what you'd expect to see in the middle of nowhere).  Craig had a chat to one of the works while he waited for me to walk across the causeway after taking photos.  The fellow was lying on the ground when Craig pulled up and he asked him if he was sleeping on the job, the fellow with quick with his reply "no, I'm listening for approaching cars".....  We moved on through Nifold Plains, the Morehead River & Saltwater Creek, to swing left onto the road west to Musgrave Station.
Arrived at Musgrave around 2pm, booked into the campground - only one here!  Hmmm, by 3.15pm there were 8 other campers (including another Travelander - Craig didn't get an owners manual from Darren at Travelander, so he wasn't sure what the etiquette was).  By 5pm a further 10 campers had arrived - we camped downt he back, but were amazed how many people camped on top of other people when it wasn't necessary, it's quiet a large area. Craig got our fire going about 4.30pm and got dinner cooking on the tripod (he wanted to do dinner because he said he didn't have anything else to do and I was writing in our journal).  Very interesting looking at all the different camping arrangements and what's involved in setting each one up.
